Bronx Alumnae Focuses on Self-Care

Committed to transforming Bronx communities through service, the Bronx Alumnae Chapter’s Membership Committee saw a need and fulfilled it in October 2020. With a focus on self-care and wellness, the members collected and donated more than 100 kits to the men and women of the Grand Concourse Rehab and Nursing Home and the East Haven Rehab and Nursing Home.

Since the onset of COVID-19, the residents have not been able to practice their normal self-care routines. For many being released from hospitals into the care of the nursing homes, residents did not come prepared with personal care essentials. Seeing this need, Nursing Director Erica Mills put out a call for help and Bronx Alumnae came to the rescue.

“Watching the residents open the wellness packets brought a sense of normalcy back to their lives even if it was just for a day,” Mills said. “Their happiness and smiles are part of the reason why I chose the nursing profession in the first place. We look forward to the continued partnership with the ladies of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., Bronx Alumnae Chapter.”

New sorority member Astere Yemmer-Brown worked on putting the gift bags together. This project was especially dear to her heart as this was her first act of community service as a member of the Bronx Alumnae Chapter.

“This project was so touching for me because it directly supported the elderly. I was the caregiver for my late aunt, and I know firsthand the impact of making the elderly feel loved and remembered,” she said. “I was blessed to be able to participate with my young daughter who also cared for my late aunt. This was very special for me.”

The kits for men included word search and/or crossword puzzles, comb, brush, lotion, and a handkerchief. The kits for women included word search and/or crossword puzzles, comb, brush, lotion, nail polish and a nail file.

Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. promotes self-care and now more than ever, it was important to bring a little joy and restore a sense of normalcy for those who need it most.
