Submitted by Kristina Blackwood

In celebration of Collegiate Connection Month and Domestic Violence Awareness Month, on Oct. 29, 2020 the Bronx Alumnae Chapter and Epsilon Tau Chapter held a virtual panel discussion for the community titled, “Love is Not Abusive.” There were more than 70 people in attendance.

Schools under Epsilon Tau’s charter includes City College, NYIT and Monroe College, Bronx Campus. The panel consisted of representatives from each school, including Ms. Tiffany Ciprian, Licensed Clinical Social Worker at NYIT; Soror Edith Banks, Dean of First Year Experience at Monroe College; and Mr. Eric McGriff, Prevention Coordinator for Crime Victims Treatment Center and affiliate of City College.

Statistics were shared regarding the prevalence of domestic violence among teenagers, adults and college students, as well as warning signs, preventative measures and supportive resources. One community member shared that she was a victim of domestic violence and was highly touched by the program. Participants were engaged, shared stories and asked insightful questions!

A follow-up survey was conducted in which 95 percent of the attendees felt the presenters were knowledgeable and gave useful information. One attendee shared via the survey that the program was very interactive, the speakers were inclusive and provided great tips/techniques for the attendees. They are looking forward to attending more events.

The Bronx Alumnae Chapter looks forward to continuing to collaborate with collegiate chapters throughout the sorority year, as well as providing informative programs for the community!
