In the spirit of our ancestors, the New Jersey Garden City Alumnae Chapter presented “Crowns Up: Queenin’ Head Wrap Demonstration” on Feb. 19, 2021 to 120 regal guests ready to learn and practice new ways to adorn their crowning glory.
An exciting version of “Lift Every Voice and Sing” by Kirk Franklin started the evening of a cultural journey, which featured African and Caribbean music, dance, games, and the highly anticipated lessons. “Queens” from Alabama, Tennessee, Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, Pennsylvania, New York, and New Jersey were treated to more than 20 new wrapping styles.
It was truly an inclusive affair featuring stylists from the chapter and community. Delta Doll Rafiah Hickson and Divas, Vanessa Jenkins, and Christina Watley showcased head wraps and accessories. Community members included Lagos, Nigerian-born, Jemilat Adebiyi, Francis Lawrence, and La Shawn Davis, who expertly guided participants through simple and casual to complex and more formal styles. There was a look for everyone. A video of head wraps from around the world was produced by the committee’s Delta Dolls while the DEARS, Tally Harris and Valerie Carr were joined by both seasoned and the newest members of the chapter as storytellers. One participant commented, “Aaawwwsome!!” Teamwork made this dream work.
Keeping with the chapter’s commitment to movement, two dances, “Jump in the Line”(Soca) and “Jerusalema (South Africa) were taught by a talented young dance instructor, Macy Collins. A brief overview of Delta’s history highlighted its international chapters. To ensure guests were paying attention, prizes were awarded to those who were able to identify information associated with one of Delta’s newest chapters, The Greater Toronto Area Alumnae Chapter. As the enthusiasm built throughout the event, participants shared information about purchasing various fabric and accessories. Entrepreneurs joining for the evening were encouraged to advertise their businesses in the Zoom chat.
Despite the event lasting more than two hours on a Friday night, close to 95 guests remained until the end of the program.. The positive feedback has been outstanding with many requesting a part two. Phone call, surveys, texts, emails, and comments shared made the efforts of the passionate and dedicated International Awareness and Involvement Committee and New Jersey Garden City Alumnae Chapter very proud. It was an inspirational international journey.
A much-admired Delta Dear and Queen gave the highest praise, “Violets to you! Deltastic International Awareness virtual event, Be Blessed.”
