Eastern Regional Representative Nadege DeBrosse hosted Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated’s first virtual collegiate retreat on Saturday, Nov. 21, 2020. Elevating BOSS (Bringing Overall Success to our Sisters) MOVES in THE EAST had more than 90 attendees andstarted the morning with a powerful meditation from 22nd National President Rev. Collegiates also heard greetings from 16th National President Dr. Thelma Thomas Daley, Eastern Regional Director Rosie Allen-Herring, National Secretary Elsie Cooke-Holmes and National President & CEO Beverly Evans Smith.
The retreat, which was all about bringing overall success to the region’s colligates, consisted of eight sessions designed to help them be successful at “Being Bold Outstanding Sorors In Service.”
As a result, attendees were challenged by President Smith to Be BOLD: You have nothing to lose. Also, to Be OUTSTANDING: Understand what outstanding means to you.
After introductions, attendees were divided into two breakout room workshops. Graduating seniors attended “Elevating Postgrad” and sophomores and juniors participated in “Balancing Boss Moves.”
During “Elevating Postgrad,” seniors had the opportunities to speak with recent graduates such as Immediate Past National Second Vice President Jaria Martin, Immediate Past Eastern Region Representative Faith Wade, Petra Holness a Spring 2020 initiate of Xi Phi at SUNY at Albany, and Nisani Lopez, a Spring 2018 initiate of Mu Beta at George Washington University and member of Nassau Alumnae Chapter, N.Y.
Attendees discussed ways to balance being a senior, holding positions in their chapters, using resources on and off campus, looking for job opportunities, and connecting with alumnae chapters after graduation. The group also shared experiences relating to maintaining their mental health.
“We all are planners. Yes, plan and work toward what you want to do, but God has a beautiful plan, and it is unfolding before you. God will destine you with what is for you,” were a few inspirational words from Martin.
Each workshop was graciously moderated by the State Facilitators. Presenters included Dynamic Eastern Region Member of Scholarship and Standards Dr. Marie-Carmel Durandisse Pressley, and Co-Chairs of Eastern Region Advisor Taskforce Joylin Primus Armstrong and Karen Du-Bios-Walton, who shared great information on understanding the Roles and Relationships with advisors. In addition, they shared ways to balance school, life, and Delta, navigate what leadership and balance looks like, mental health tips, and how to balance your perception vs. reality. The discussions were followed by poll questions that allowed collegiates to share their insight on each topic.
