On Saturday, Oct. 26, more than 1,000 members of the Dynamic and Historic Eastern Region met on the campus of SUNY Purchase in Westchester County for the regional fall meeting.  As all entered the Performing Arts Center, the energy was high as they were greeted and walked through the vendors’ area to a continental breakfast.

Emphasizing safety first, the Emergency Response Team shared a safety message at the beginning of the morning session.  After a photo montage that featured sorority members and highlighted New York City, the opening prayer was done by Regional Chaplain Rev. Natalie Alford. Regional Secretary Randi Gray welcomed the assembly and introduced the dais.  Eastern Regional Director Rosia Blackwell Lawrence and Regional Representative Faith Wade offered opening remarks and highlights for the last biennium. For example, during the 2018-2019 sorority year, the region gained 848 new members and reclaimed 2,087.

National updates were presented by the Technology Committee and the Strategic Planning Committee followed by special regional presentations.  The collegiate advisors were recognized for their service during the 2018-2019 sorority year and the 21-member Delta P.E.A.R.L inaugural cohort for 2019-2020 was introduced by the National Leadership Academy.  The Regional Awards that were to be announced at the national convention were presented to the winning alumnae and collegiate members and chapters. Special awards were given to three sorority members for outstanding service to the region including Sinthea Kelly, Membership Service Chair; Pamela Jackson, Assistant Regional Secretary; and Chanta L. Jackson, Regional Journalist.

In addition, several regional committees provided updates including Nominating, Program Planning and Development, Reactivations and Charters, Arts & Letters, Protocol and Traditions, and Data Collection and Institutional Research. Highlights from their presentations included preparation of a full slate for the seven positions up for election in 2020; 95 percent chapter participation in the Sisterhood Service Program; reactivation of 30 chapters and the creation of three new ones; and the importance of collecting data that reflects community involvement and impact.

The Regional Conference Planning Committee offered a sneak peak of what attendees can look forward to in the summer of 2020 as we head to National Harbor in Prince George’s County, Maryland. To close out the morning session, Traci Price Birckhead, Eastern Region Member of the National Scholarship and Standards Committee, presented a workshop on branding. She reminded all members that they are always wearing their letters and that their actions should reinforce the sorority’s mission and focus.

The afternoon was devoted to training as a plethora of workshops were offered — from the Officers Institute for presidents, vice presidents, secretaries, and committee chairs to those on protocol and traditions, scholarship and standards, strategic planning, membership services, and social action.
