On May 25, 2021 Montclair Alumnae Chapter in collaboration with New Jersey Coalition against Human Trafficking presented a Human Trafficking 101 Webinar.

Hosted by Political Awareness & Involvement Committee chaired by Sharon Cockey, Esq.

There are multiple categories of trafficking.

·         Anyone can be a trafficker.

·         Anyone can be trafficked.

·         Everyone can help prevent it.

Other helpful tips include:

Human trafficking is NOT the same as smuggling.

Human trafficking does NOT require physical movement.

NJ is a densely populated state with easy access off I-95 corridor, air/seaports, roads, trains and proximity to major cities and tourist destinations.

90% of NJ cases reported through DREAM FREE were sex trafficking survivors. 

80% of NJ cases reported through DREAM FREE were U.S. citizens.

247 human trafficking cases were reported in New Jersey to the National Hotline in 2019 an increase of 10% from 2018.

Note that these numbers are based on reported data.

There are many special vulnerabilities to trafficking.

Traffickers use manipulation and isolation to groom in the real and virtual world.

Coercive tactics used by traffickers is why victims find it hard to leave.

Everyone has a role:

Educate yourself, share with your community, and talk to your Legislators.
