Morristown Alumnae Helps Its Community Prepare for Hurricane Season

By Ferlanda Fox Nixon

To help prepare the residents of its community for the current hurricane season (June 1-November 30), the members of the Morristown Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, held an informational webinar during National Hurricane Preparedness Week (May 9-15). The event provided tips and best practices to follow during a power outage caused by a storm. Stan Prater served as the keynote speaker.

Prater is a regional external affairs consultant at Jersey Central Power & Light (JCP&L), a subsidiary of FirstEnergy Corp. He serves as the company’s liaison for more than 40 municipalities in Hunterdon and Warren counties, two of the four counties that fall within Morristown Alumnae’s catchment area. JCP&L has more than one million customers in a 3,300-square-mile service area and serves 236 municipalities and 13 of 21 counties in Central and Northern New Jersey.

The majority of Prater’s presentation dealt with the process for restoring power to communities. JCP&L first secures any known hazards, like downed wires, and then gives priority to hospitals, police and fire departments, and other critical facilities. Transmission lines and substations that supply power to the local system get fixed, followed by repairs that restore the largest number of customers.

Webinar attendees also were urged to pay heed to storm alerts and plan ahead, build an emergency survival kit, and stay informed. In the wake of a hurricane, survivors should stay away from debris, avoid downed or exposed electrical wires, limit phone calls to emergencies, and confirm that safe drinking water has been restored.

“I am grateful that our Emergency Response Team had the foresight to bring this webinar to our community,” said Morristown Alumnae Chapter President Marian Sykes Johnson. “This is exactly what being Delta ‘REDy’ looks like.”
