The Morristown Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, hosted its first Fitness Friday wellness event on Jan. 29, 2021, leading approximately 25 participants on a virtual journey through mind, body, and soul.

After setting the tone with uplifting music, Morristown Alumnae member Aubree Ashtynn Dumas opened the program with a dance fitness class. Attendees followed along as Dumas warmed up with several fun and engaging dance moves. Dumas then demonstrated a short dance combination which participants performed ensemble toward the end of the session. With hearts thumping, the attendees concluded the body segment of the program in lively freestyle dance.

Taking a moment for a water break and to cool down, the program transitioned to a mental health discussion led by Jaslynn Moore, a clinician from Serene Soul Counseling Solutions in Succasunna, New Jersey. Moore created a safe space for guests to share and discuss the importance of maintaining mental health in today’s world. A spirited discussion ensued during which attendees shared their personal mental health journeys and provided insights on what helps them to stay motivated.

Moore’s skilled facilitation of the session provoked great conversation and allowed her to answer all questions posed by attendees. When asked about tips for practicing good health in times of quarantine and unpredictable weather, Moore provided a list of ways people can practice self-care right in their own homes. Attendees departed the session with new online resources to incorporate into their everyday lives to promote better mental and physical health.

Fitness Friday concluded with a focus on the soul. Morristown Alumnae member Jeannie Holman led guests in a soothing meditation session. The session began with a “check-in” where Holman encouraged everyone to write down two words that best described how they were currently feeling. With sentiments recorded, Holman guided guests through a breathing technique to calm their minds. The exercise ended in a five-minute meditation, allowing guests to focus on being present and in the moment. Once completed, Holman again requested attendees to write down two words that best described how they were feeling at that time. The positive impact the meditation had was clear as many guests went from using words like “hungry” and “tired” premeditation, to “calm” and “relaxed” post-meditation.

“This is the best breathing exercise I have ever done,” said Morristown Alumnae Chapter President Marian Sykes Johnson. “I wish it could be taught to everyone. I am committed to making it a part of my daily routine.”

Like Johnson, the other attendees left Fitness Friday feeling calm, rejuvenated, and ready to prioritize their minds, bodies, and souls every day.
