The Philadelphia Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta, Incorporated took delight in introducing the highly anticipated “Pages and Pearls Book Club,” spawning a Feb. 18, 2021 premier Virtual Book Talk featuring “An American Marriage” by Tayari Jones. Hosted in collaboration with the Dolls and Divas and Arts and Letters Committees, chapter members, family, and friends joined to discuss an Oprah favorite, viewed through the lens of three intertwining lives showcasing inequities in social justice and the effects of mass incarceration during our experiences with unrequited, familial love.
During the event’s opening remarks, Philadelphia Alumnae’s Chapter President Penny Sparks Nixon, shared “A great author once wrote-Books give a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination, and life to everything else.” Featuring Tayari Jones’s, “An American Marriage” did just that, as it told a story of love and loss between a newly-married, African-American couple, once blended into the uptick fabric of Atlanta, only to find their lives turned upside down in the very Louisiana-bred town where one of them was born and raised, tarnished by racial injustice.
Reaching more 125 early registrants, a series of engaging surveys and social media activities occurred to encourage reading, “test” book knowledge, and offer opportunities to win prized gift cards to Harriet’s Bookstore, a local bookstore, proudly Black- and female-owned.
Pages and Pearls Book Club participants joined the virtual book event ready to talk! As the DJ played relatable tunes to greet guests, participants dropped their name and one word for their initial reaction to the book in the chat, preparing to participate in intimate break out rooms, as well as full-scale conversations promoted by key discussion questions and book points. After hearing Tayari’s take on “An American Marriage” through video highlights, participants from all age ranges excitedly shared their points of view, feelings, and thoughts regarding major challenges the African-American community faces. To balance the heavy topics, opinion polls and the Wheel of Names served as breathtaking intermissions where guests cheered on the raffle winners.
Being virtual didn’t stop the fun and meaningful fellowship between those who joined from all over! The most asked question of the night? “What are we reading next?” Philadelphia Alumnae Chapter answered: “Stay tuned for the next chapter!”
