Philadelphia Alumnae Encourages Community to Step Into Wellness

The Philadelphia Alumnae Chapter, led by its Physical and Mental Health committee, invited the community to a virtual health and wellness event “Stepping into Wellness,” on May 2, 2021. The event opened with greetings from Chapter President, Dr. Penny Sparks Nixon and continued in the Main Hall. Utilizing the Kahoot app, with a quiz to challenge the audience’s health and wellness knowledge, participants competed in a timed challenge. The first three responders to answer 20 questions were given gift cards. Next, participants were led into breakout rooms for an hour during which they could freely move from one room to another and engage in activities, including:
A Cooking Demonstration featuring preparation of two salads and flavored water. Participants were sent recipes for the Very Berry Kale and Watermelon and Feta Cheese salads and fruit infused flavored water.
The Fitness Room offered two, 30-minute workouts designed for all level of fitness and ages. All participants were notified to check with physician about exercise, to drink plenty of water and wear comfortable clothing.
A Vision Board Room in which facilitators shared their vision boards and led open discussion with participants about their vision boards and goals. Suggestions for materials to create the boards were sent in advance; however, participants were also able to virtually create their vision boards.
The Mediation Room offered three, 15-minute relaxation sessions with chapter members demonstrating various relaxation techniques and creating a conducive environment.
The Line Dancing Room emphasized movement with fun. Seven well-known line dances were chosen so that all participants could easily join in and follow the steps.
The Photo Booth was an event highlight giving an opportunity for participants to showcase themselves and choose between frames reflecting the event’s “stepping into wellness” theme.
Finally, the Community Health and Wellness Partners Room featured national and community partners and supporters, including: the American Heart Association; March of Dimes; St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital; Weight Watchers-Wellness that Works; Einstein Healthcare Network; Dad Lab and A Better Start, FUN program (Families Understanding Nutrition); Gift of Life Donor Program; and Women in Transition.
Participants returned to the Main Hall to close-out the event. The closing addressed the importance of being vaccinated to combat COVID-19. A YouTube video, featuring W. Kamau Bell, “A Talk with Black Healthcare Workers about COVID vaccines.” After a brief discussion, the 85 participants were given online health and wellness resources and asked to complete an evaluation survey. The afternoon program ended with a YouTube Public Health Hip Hop Video, “Community Immunity, Part 4 What Can I Expect If I Take the Vaccine?” as additional time was allotted to visit the photo booth.
