The Philadelphia Alumnae Chapter (PAC) of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated hosted a virtual community forum on World AIDS Day, Dec. 1, 2020.
The PAC International Awareness & Involvement Committee, in collaboration with the Physical and Mental Health Committee, held a virtual World AIDS Day community forum and panel discussion titled: “HIV/AIDS, COVID 19 and Mental Health.”
The 145 virtual participants were greeted by the committees’ co-chairs, followed by opening remarks by the PAC President, Dr. Penny Sparks Nixon.
The panel was moderated by Dr. Karimah Bell-Lynum. Panelists included: National Field Director specializing in Infectious Diseases, Dr. Kimberley Brown; Action Wellness Medical Case Manager, Ms. Kate King, and Clinical Psychologist, Dr. Shekesha Clarke. All three of the panelists are experts in the areas of HIV/AIDS and the Mental Health effects of COVID 19.
In addition to providing a wealth of information, the panelists answered many questions brought forth by attendees. Prior to the discussion, an online survey of five questions was conducted to test the pre-discussion knowledge of participants. After the discussion, the identical questions were presented to test participants’ post-discussion knowledge. The panelists and the moderator reviewed each of the questions and provided the correct answers and a brief explanation to ensure attendees left the program armed with accurate information. Attendees were asked a final question during the post-question assessment, which showed overwhelmingly that the World AIDS Day panel discussion, “HIV/AIDS, COVID19, and Mental Health” was an impactful community awareness and engagement program.
Additionally, participants were sent a post-program resource document titled “Where Do We Go From Here?” providing free HIV testing locations, links to resources on COVID 19 and Mental Health from the Centers for Disease Control and National Institute of Health. Also included was resource information on HIV Transplants made possible under the leadership of former President Barack Obama.
The virtual event concluded with a gift card raffle of 10 gift cards to ShopRite Supermarkets. Brown’s ShopRite Supermarkets has partnered with PAC Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. for the past 10 years, on World AIDS Day to provide HIV/AIDS awareness and free HIV testing in the community. This is an ongoing partnership and program that the community looks forward to every year.
