The Philadelphia Alumnae Chapter held its 2020 Jabberwock Pageant in June with a theme of “95 Years Through the Looking Glass.”  The event, co-chaired by Leslie Adderley-Long, Elaine Lawrence-Green and Kendra Thomas, began as an in-person event for 12 young ladies and ended as a wonderful Junior Miss Jabberwock and Miss Jabberwock Virtual Pageant for the contestants and their escorts!

The 2020 Junior Miss Jabberwock winner was Madison Matchett and the Miss Jabberwock winner was Trinity Smith.  All of the contestants raised a total of $51,528.00. The winners were crowned by the 2018 Junior Miss and Miss Jabberwock winners, Laniyah Hill and sorority member Jaden Fields.  Each contestant was able to come away with a percentage of their winnings in scholarship money.

A dynamic Zoom/YouTube virtual pageant was created by the chapter’s award-winning Tech- Team, which featured the contestants’ talents and creativity.  In addition, the young ladies performed a special dance highlighting the theme of “Through the Looking Glass,” as they moved between their activities into their gowns.

Some of the events that the families participated in included: vending at chapter meetings; selling tickets for an Applebee’s’ Flapjack breakfast; the Philadelphia Mural Arts Tour; creating Vision Boards that showed the contestants’ interests and aspirations, and dance practices via Zoom.  The chapter’s young ladies have very high aspirations, which included one contestant who dreams of joining the ranks of an elite group of Black female commercial pilots in the USA, as well as becoming entrepreneurs!

The chapter members on the Jabberwock Committee worked hard to stay connected with the contestants, escorts and their families.

“Because of the pandemic, it was a challenging task to stay focused, but each of the committee members stayed the course to make sure that our event was successful,” stated Co-Chair, Elaine Lawrence-Green.  “As mandates were made, we carefully moved through the process, so that the young ladies could have the best possible experience, and it worked!”

Each of the young ladies worked hard as they participated in very unusual conditions during the pandemic.  Chapter members plan to continue relationships with each of them and hope the contestants have established a connection with each other that will continue throughout life’s journey.  The chapter’s next Junior Miss and Miss Jabberwock will take place in 2022.
