On February 1, 2020, North Jersey Alumnae Chapter (NJAC) of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. and Beta Alpha Omega (BAO) Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority collaborated for the fifth time in hosting Pink Goes Red. In support of the American Heart Association (AHA), more than 300 members of the community and of both organizations gathered at the Great Hall, Rutgers University-Newark to promote awareness of women’s heart health. To support education and research, the event raised $8,300, jointly donated by the two sororities to AHA.

Guest speakers Soror Karma Brown Warren, MD, Emergency Room University Hospital, and La-Kisa Hines, health educator from United Healthcare, shared information on understanding the importance of taking care of your heart and overall health. Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in women, yielding one in three deaths each year. Among African-American women, cardiovascular disease kills nearly 50,000 annually. Of African-American women ages 20 and older, 49 percent have heart disease. Also contributing to the presentations were Lori Walker and Rachel Johnson, representing the American Heart Association.

To round out the event, guests were treated to live music by Thelma “DJ Tee Ramz: Ramsey, a member of Delta Sigma Theta; a buffet; and a fashion show, with NJAC’s President Dr. Dorita Newsome-Dobbins, BAO President Harriet Raghnal and the ladies of Delta and AKA serving as models. Hackensack Meridian Hospital screened 90 women for body mass index and body fat, and 80 women for blood pressure and stroke risk. North Jersey Alumnae also offered information on voter registration and Census 2020 at resource tables.
