Providence Alumnae Marks Five Decades of Service In Rhode Island

Countdown to Fifty was the theme as the Providence Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated celebrated 50 years of Sisterhood, Scholarship, and Service!

The chapter decided to launch its week-long celebration with chapter members, current and past, by sharing photo memories. First, they focused on the Charter Members of Providence Alumnae. The chapter’s Historian, along with the Vice President interviewed the chapter’s living Charter members and Delta Dears.  During the interviews, they were able to obtain the chapter’s Charter Day photos from 1970.

In July of 1970, 13 dynamic women decided that Providence, Rhode Island, needed service that only Delta could provide.  At that time, the reason for requesting a chapter was that they “endeavored to work for the continuous improvement of physical and social conditions in our community.”  That mission remains true today.

With the help of Marva Scott-Starks, then-Eastern Regional Director, the members petitioned National headquarters and on a chilly October day, the Providence Alumnae Chapter was established.

The current chapter originally planned a grand, multi-day celebration, open to sorority members from throughout the Eastern Region but were forced to adjust those plans due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Instead, the chapter held a 10-day virtual countdown, which included various accomplishments and statewide initiatives that were organized by Providence Alumnae, including the Ebony Fashion Show fundraiser.

The celebration culminated in a virtual brunch on Oct. 31, where previous and current Providence Alumnae members from around the globe broke bread and reminisced about the impact that Providence Alumnae has had one our community and the lives of our members. The chapter was blessed to have three Charter members — Bennie Fleming, Joane Moore and Lynne Edmonds — join the celebration!
