Despite unusual circumstances brought on by a pandemic, 26 chapters across the District of Columbia, Maryland and Virginia transitioned the traditional Washington Metropolitan Area-Wide Founders Day Event, into the DMV Day of Service (DoS).  Held on January 30, 2021, chapters from both the Eastern and South Atlantic Regions hosted service projects that focused on Elder Care, recognizing the seniors in their communities. With the help of more than 900 community members and 27 community partners, chapters rendered over 3,500 hours of service through a variety of projects, which included:

  • Over 940 care packages/gift donations
  • 4 virtual senior activities
  • Over 12,000 letters and cards distributed
  • 7 webinars conducted
  • Over 2,700 daily essentials donated
  • Over 3,500 Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) donated
  • 18 Vison Boards provided
  • 18 Samsung Tablets donated

In addition to the chapter service projects, a fundraising campaign was conducted from September 2020 – January 2021 in support of the Sorority’s International Awareness and Involvement (IAI) Sustainability Plan.  Chapter member supported the campaign by making a patron donation and/or purchasing a DoS shirt. Chapters more than tripled the fundraising goal of $15,000, amassing a total of $47,000 for the sorority’s international projects.  The $47,000 raised equates to more than 700,000 South African Rand.

The success of the 2021 DMV DoS has allowed chapters of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated to continue to serve well throughout the DC, Maryland and Virginia area and internationally.
